The Salt Design 2018 Calendar is here – a homage to our most loved modern artists and art movements.
January – by Bree
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (21.08.1872 – 16.03.1898) was an English illustrator and author. Influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, his black ink drawings emphasized the grotesque, the decadent and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler.
Beardsley’s contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau and poster styles was significant.
Art Nouveau was an international style of art, architecture and applied art, that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. It was a total art style – embracing a wide range of fine and decorative arts, including architecture, painting, graphic art, interior design, jewellery, furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass art, and metal work. It was inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers.
What I love about Beardsley’s style was the way he incorporated and combined elements of both nature and the human form together in his work to create dark and eerie pieces, while still having a prominent Nouveau style. I also admire the works of other artists of the time including William Morris, Antoni Gaudí, Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt.
Of course, as an added bonus, we couldn’t help but create FREE wallpapers for your desktop and mobile devices!
